Steve Jobs takes $1 salary in 2009

Not many would know that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs, draws a salary of US$1 year on year. This year, he chose not to accept any bonus or stock options from Apple either. Apple again gave its founder and CEO a symbolic salary of $1 for the fiscal year 2009, according to a report filed on Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Times Of India had covered an interesting article earlier this week, on how Apple pays back Steve Jobs for his contribution back to Apple in particular and the world of technology at large:

Jobs does not get a bonus or reimbursement for perks that many other CEOs accept, such as personal security, according to a regulatory filing. Apple said it reimbursed Jobs $4,000 for company travel on his $90 million Gulfstream V jet, which he received as a bonus in 1999.

That’s far less than the $871,000 Apple reimbursed Jobs in 2008. The CEO took nearly six months off in 2009 for medical leave, during which time he received a liver transplant. He returned to work at the company’s Cupertino, California, headquarters part-time at the end of June.

Steve Jobs, holds 5.5 million shares of Apple’s stock. He has not sold any shares since he rejoined the company in 1997, nor has he been awarded any new equity since 2003

Japanese man marries his DS game, no one calls him crazy

.. until now! A Japanese man, who is obviously a little bit off his rocker, has married a character in a Japanese dating sim for his DS. Now that he’s married to his virtual girlfriend in the virtual DS dating simulation. Love Plus, he also apparently decided to go on a honeymoon with her - to Guam. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

The man, who prefers to use his online name of SAL9000 (get it?!?), met his now virtual wife Nene Anegasaki while playing Love Plus. It was love at first touch - he married “her” a few weeks ago and broadcasts the ceremony live on a Japanese video-sharing site.

SAL9000, who did not want to reveal his real name for fear of being ridiculed admits that he’s an “otaku,” a person who is obsessed with video games, anime, computers and fantasy worlds. Some might call them NERDS.

Tapulous claims millions in profits on iPhone games

Mobile, iPhone and iPod touch game developer Tapulous says that it is seeing huge success developing games for Apple’s platforms. The company says that its rhythm music game, Tap Tap Revenge is the driving force behind an monthly sales of $1 million USD per month and more than 20 million copies of its game being installed around the world. More than 600 million games played have been played to date, according to the company’s internal figures.

The company says it’s profitable, but won’t show exact sales figures - it doesn’t have to, it’s a private company and not publically traded. Tapulous hopes to ride a wave of exponential growth in mobile app commerce space for the next two years.

That’s a high level of profit for a company that almost exclusively develops iPhone music-based games. While the Music game space is having some tough times, apparently games on the iPod touch and iPhone — even Music games - are doing just fine. Tapulous raised $2.8 million from investors, which include such notables as Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. Tapulous generates sales in a variety of ways including traditional game sales, ad supported games, and by selling content like songs through its games.

iPhone and Vodafone UK set the date: January 14

Vodafone has decided if it can't give us the iPhone for the holidays, it'll do the next best thing and spill details of its launch and pricing of Apple's finest. Available from January 14, the iPhone will be yours for £30 ($48) per month on two-year contracts, though up-front charges will set you back £239 (£386) for the 32GB 3GS variety. A monthly 1GB of 3G data is permitted, alongside unlimited WiFi, but what might be most interesting here is that Vodafone will allow you to use the iPhone as a modem. Such use will not be covered by your allowance of course, and will cost £5 ($8) for each 500MB downloaded, but we're happy to see a carrier offering the option. Furthermore, though Vodafone's agreement to carry the iPhone seemed a rushed defensive move, the company now claims it has been preparing its network for over a year to handle the increased traffic it expects.
iPhone and Vodafone UK set the date: January 14 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 06:03:00 EST.

Adweek names Apple the ‘Brand of the Decade’

AdweekMedia’s Best of the2000’s brought some of the best advertising awards of 2000’s. And Apple ended up recieving top honors in 6 categories including Brand of the Decade” and “Marketer of the Decade” for Steve Jobs. AppleInsider as usual did a great job covering this even on its blog:

Naming Apple the “Brand of the Decade,” AdweekMedia attributes the brand’s success to Steve Jobs, calling Apple “the embodiment of a living, breathing person.” Jobs was named “Marketer of the Decade” and is credited with relaunching the Apple brand with the “Think Different” ad campaign. Apple’s CEO is described as being visionary, iconoclastic, and fearless. Jobs is also up for Time’s Person of the Year and was named “CEO of the Decade” by Fortune in November.

With 220 million iPods sold worldwide, Apple’s music player was named “Product of the Decade” and is compared to the Walkman in terms of cultural impact.

Two of Apple’s iconic ad campaigns are represented on the list, with the “Get a Mac” ads winning “Campaign of the Decade” and “Silhouettes” winning “Out-of-Home Ad of the Decade.”

iPhone Apps Are Latest Gold Rush

December 15th, 2009 at 3:00 am - San Diego, California – The iPhone has minted a gold rush. In just two years, the iPhone has become not just a gold mine for Apple Inc., but also for companies that create the software programs that run on the device. Since Apple launched its iPhone applications storefront via its iTunes software, more than 100,000 applications have been created (148Apps – Nov 2009), with more than 1 billion downloaded onto iPhones and iPod Touches.

iPhone applications are specially designed software programs that work exclusively on the iPhone. They vary from sports updates to video games to utilities that allow people to use their iPhones as flashlights or as locators of the nearest Tim Hortons.

For media companies especially, iPhone applications are about staying ahead of the curve. In industry parlance, it’s called being where the audience is. Optimistic industry observers such as Dale Fallon, director of Score Media Inc.’s mobile division, expect that within two or three years the audience for sports-based mobile Web sites and software will be the same size as the current Web audience.

Meanwhile, the applications act as incremental revenue streams, double as effective marketing tools and allow smaller media companies to extend their brands.

At Pelmorex Media Inc.’s Weather Network (Canada), the iPhone application WeatherEye is just part of the channel’s expanding mobile arsenal. The network’s offerings include a mobile Web site, desktop widgets and an application launched in March for use on the BlackBerry device.

The free WeatherEye has been downloaded almost 750,000 times since the end of October, with just under half of those by people outside of Canada. The French version of the application is the most popular weather application in France.

“From a return on investment perspective, it absolutely makes sense,” said Mark Thompson, director of The Weather Network’s mobile division.

Apple takes a 30% cut of any iPhone applications that are sold at its virtual store, but for applications offered for free, the companies do not have to share their advertising revenue with Apple.

The surge in iPhone applications has also benefited developers. With companies now scrambling to find anyone capable of making these programs, some developers command upwards of $200 per hour and applications cost between $15,000 to $50,000 to create.

Certain developers have found themselves in the spotlight after finding some of their applications – which invairiably retail for less than $5 – have yielded more than $250,000 in sales in thier first couple of months, convincing some to give up their day jobs in the process.

“It’s a market that has appeared out of nowhere, really,” said Ian Maskell, SEO of CA-based application developers site iPhone App Freelancer.

“All of a sudden, anyone who knows how to make an iPhone app are making lots of money off it. It’s one of those things that doesn’t come around very often but when it does, the first people through the gate make a bundle,” he said.

However, with developers being in such high demand, the prices quoted for the development of some applications is proving prohibitive for many, so Maskell came up with a plan.

With what he believed to be a killer application idea, but struggling to find a developer (within his budget) who could help, Maskell set about creating iPhone App Freelancer, to connect “ideas people” to programmers and developers. “Through our website we offer companies and individuals with great ideas the ability to turn them into iPhone apps with little or no programming knowledge”.

“Much like an auction, we bring entrepreneurs and businesses together with experienced iPhone application developers in the most cost effective manner possible” – says Maskell.

“We have approximately 800 members, and a pool of about 300 developers who receive notification whenever someone posts a new project,” he says. “I would estimate we’ve had close to 100 projects completed.”

And just how important will the iPhone become as an effective marketing tool in the coming months and years? “One customer stated that about 60% of the estimated five-million monthly page views they recieve on their site were generated by the iPhone” – Maskell states.

“With those kind of figures, you can see the potential is there for getting your brand exposed to a massive and ever increasing audience” Maskell continues – “from a business perspective, there is a massive captive audience at your disposal with the iPhone and the application market – the advertising potential is massive”.

The mobile advertising market is expected to hit $12-billion (USD) by 2013, compared with about $1.7-billion this year, according to research company Informa Telecoms & Media.

“If you’re not in the mobile space, you’re missing a very big opportunity to communicate with your consumers,” Mr. Maskell concludes.

Newly Formatted App Pages Have Started Appearing In App Store

iTunes app pages have started looking more like the iPhone App Store app pages. The new app page in iTunes has changed to accommodate side-scrolling screenshots of the app. So from now on, you wont have to click those dots to see rest of the screenshots, you need to just scroll. Cool stuff. Other changes include, much larger icons, moving ‘whats new in this version’ to the top, a shorter app description, more info about the developer and recommendations for related apps that you would find interesting.

But it might take a day or two for the changes to show up in your iTunes. Keep checking.

Best features are: Showing all the apps by the developer , What’s new in updated version..

Google Phone coming this Jan – Sports OLED Touchscreen

This will surely turn out to the most promising iPhone callenger; called the Google Phone. And I am sure Google Phone will help iPhone get better… much better in coming days. Google has infact started testing this new Android powered Google phone with their employees, reports TechCrunch:

Google is building their own branded phone that they’ll sell directly and through retailers. They were long planning to have the phone be available by the holidays, but it has now slipped to early 2010. The phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but will only have Google branding (Microsoft did the same thing with their first Zunes, which were built by Toshiba).

There won’t be any negotiation or compromise over the phone’s design of features – Google is dictating every last piece of it. No splintering of the Android OS that makes some applications unusable. Like the iPhone for Apple, this phone will be Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.

And will include the following details/features:

- Sold as an unlocked GSM phone, so in the U.S. T-Mobile and possibly AT&T
- Android 2.1
- Uses Snapdragon chip and is “really, really fast”
- High resolution OLED screen
- Thinner than iPhone
- Two mics, one on the back to reduce background noise
- “Weirdly” large camera
- Touchscreen keyboard
- Voice to text for dictation

A Major iPhone Malfunction

Can this happen to your iPhone too? This iPhone malfunction might have caused severe injury, reports Gizmodo. Bobby Hodges, friend of the owner of the iPhone in question, says that while plugged in to his friend’s speaker system, the music suddenly cut out and smoke began coming from the device, before bursting into flames.

I was at a fraternity house hanging out one night. One of my friends had his iPhone plugged into the speakers so we could have music. We had the usual speaker system, a receiver and some speakers. I was standing near the receiver when All the sudden the iphone cut off and started to smoke. The room filled up with what must have been hazardous smoke. After picking up the iPhone that was still extremely hot, the entire battery had been ejected from the phone and was sitting on the floor. The house smelled like burning electronics for the rest of the night and the iPhone left a square-ish burn mark on the table it was sitting on.

Hope Apple gets in touch with Bobby and investigate this issue.

Apple Removes Over 1000 Scam Apps From App Store

There is this app developer called Molinker who was involved in alleged review fraud. He was involved in close to one percent of all apps available on the App Store i,e., over 1000 apps had fraud reviews. Apple investigated this issue and yesterday it took action against this developer – he has been banned from the App Store and of its apps have been removed. AppleInsider has covered this news:

The issue was first brought to light by photo blog iPhoneography in a post highlighting the concerns of one of its regular readers. Reader SCW had concluded that app developer Molinker had been using its promo codes to write fake 5-star reviews of many of its apps. Each review shared the same short, disjointed style and the reviewers had only written reviews for other Molinker apps.

Most of Molinker’s apps dealt with photography, travel and public transportation. As per AppFreak, which was able to contact Molinker about this issue, they received the following response:

We got email from Apple yesterday which told us our contract is changed to pending status. Actually we do not know what’s wrong so far. We had contacted Apple for such sudden changes, hope we can get quick response and actions from Apple.
