Steve Jobs takes $1 salary in 2009

Not many would know that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs, draws a salary of US$1 year on year. This year, he chose not to accept any bonus or stock options from Apple either. Apple again gave its founder and CEO a symbolic salary of $1 for the fiscal year 2009, according to a report filed on Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Times Of India had covered an interesting article earlier this week, on how Apple pays back Steve Jobs for his contribution back to Apple in particular and the world of technology at large:

Jobs does not get a bonus or reimbursement for perks that many other CEOs accept, such as personal security, according to a regulatory filing. Apple said it reimbursed Jobs $4,000 for company travel on his $90 million Gulfstream V jet, which he received as a bonus in 1999.

That’s far less than the $871,000 Apple reimbursed Jobs in 2008. The CEO took nearly six months off in 2009 for medical leave, during which time he received a liver transplant. He returned to work at the company’s Cupertino, California, headquarters part-time at the end of June.

Steve Jobs, holds 5.5 million shares of Apple’s stock. He has not sold any shares since he rejoined the company in 1997, nor has he been awarded any new equity since 2003

Steve Jobs Reportedly Intervenes in iPhone Application Approval

Ars Technica reported yesterday on the approval of Knocking Live Video, which was notable for the apparent personal intervention of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after the iPhone-to-iPhone video streaming application was initially denied.

Jobs' interest in the case appears to have been sparked by an e-mail sent to him by the developer after the application was rejected for relying on private programming functions that are prohibited by Apple's iPhone developer agreement. In the e-mail, the developer argued his case by noting the functionality of the application and the fact that other applications using the same functions had previously been approved, and expanded his message to include the frustrations of many developers with the App Store review process.

Meehan ended up composing a passionate plea to Apple's CEO, explaining he has been frustrated and disheartened with the app approval process, which often leaves developers wondering and waiting with little or no response from Apple about any potential problems. He pointed out that there are other apps that had been approved using the same private API call -- though it was prior to Apple's suspected use of automated analysis software that can comb through code and spot references to unapproved APIs. Meehan even "humbly" requested that Jobs himself review a demo of the app and reconsider it for approval.

Less than 48 hours later, the developer received a call from an Apple executive to discuss the situation and note that a decision to revisit the application's status came "directly from the top", suggesting that Steve Jobs himself had become involved. Within three hours of the executive's phone call, Knocking Live Video had been approved for sale in the App Store.

Apple has received a significant amount of criticism over its App Store review policies, and a number of high-profile developers have recently quit iPhone development in frustration. For its part, Apple has started to become more vocal about its vision for the review process, with senior vice president Phil Schiller recently going public to defend the process as the company also strives to continue improving it.

TechCrunch carried this inspiring article on Thanksgiving, titled “What If Steve Jobs Hadn’t Returned To Apple In 1997?“. Steve Jobs (wiki) was thrown out of Apple, the company he co-founded in 1976 in 1985 by the then Apple CEO John Sculley. And in 1997, Steve sold his company NeXT back to Apple and officially joined the company.

What if Steve wouldnt have joined Apple? TechCrunch has few of those answers:

• In 1997 Apple had just completed a fiscal year where they lost about $1 billion on $7 billion in revenue. The company was worth about $4 billion. Today Apple is worth a staggering $184 billion on revenues of $36.5 billion and net income of $8 billion.
• In 1997 Apple had a snoozy product line that included the ill-fated Newton, the Performa, the Power Macintosh, the PowerBook a bunch of printers and a few servers. Today Apple has the sexiest products in the business: iMacs, Macbooks, iPhones, iPods and more. Even the Mac Mini has a place in my home, powering my television.

Forget all that, what would our world look like without Steve Jobs?

We’d likely still be in mobile phone hell. Chances are we still wouldn’t have a decent browsing experience on the phone, and we certainly wouldn’t be enjoying third party apps like Pandora or Skype on whatever clunker the carriers handed us. Even if you use an Android, Palm Pre or newer Blackberry today, you must thank Apple for pushing open the doors to mobile freedom. Think back to the phone you had in 2006, and then tell me you don’t love Apple for the iPhone alone (yes, I’ve moved on, but the iPhone was the genesis).
